A traditional O-ring groove shape is rectangular and\u00a0wider than deep. This\u00a0allows\u00a0space for the seal to be compressed, about 25% (for static sealing), and still have some excess room for the seal to expand slightly from thermal expansion or swell from the fluid.\u00a0 Reference Figure 1 as an example. A seal with good compression set resistance means simply that the seal resists \u201csetting\u201d in the shape of the group, so it can function longer as a seal.\u00a0 There are many inputs to the compression set, including material, time at temperature, amount of compression, fluid, to name a few.\u00a0 If all these variables are held the same, a thicker seal tends to be better at resisting the compression set.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p><strong>Tolerances<\/strong><\/p>\n<div>A second benefit to a thicker seal is that they are more able to compensate for tolerances in the hardware.\u00a0 Particularly with the .103\u201d (2,62) size and smaller, which have a tolerance of \u00b10.003\u201d (0,08mm).\u00a0 For hardware scenarios with an identical tolerance of \u00b10.002, since the tolerance on the seal does not decrease as the O-ring thickness decreases, the impact is that the range on the seal compression (Squeeze) increases.\u00a0 See Table 2 for the squeeze details on three sizes placed in groove depths having a nominal compression of 25%<\/div>\n<\/div><\/section><\/div>\n\n<style type=\"text\/css\" data-created_by=\"avia_inline_auto\" id=\"style-css-av-hqdfb2-6690654637872c21fcb79518eeca1346\">\n.flex_column.av-hqdfb2-6690654637872c21fcb79518eeca1346{\n-webkit-border-radius:0px 0px 0px 0px;\n-moz-border-radius:0px 0px 0px 0px;\nborder-radius:0px 0px 0px 0px;\npadding:0px 0px 0px 0px;\n}\n<\/style>\n<div  class='flex_column av-hqdfb2-6690654637872c21fcb79518eeca1346 av_one_full  avia-builder-el-15  el_after_av_one_full  el_before_av_one_full  first flex_column_div av-zero-column-padding  column-top-margin'     ><section  class='av_textblock_section av-ea6ty6-213f95bb08f746c2d156bfbc23c76dec '   itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock'  itemprop=\"text\" ><p><strong>Contact Width<\/strong><\/p>\n<div>A third benefit to the thicker cross-sections is the contact width between the seal and the hardware. However, thick seals will also have more friction in dynamic applications.\u00a0 For this reason, it is recommended that the designed squeeze be reduced on dynamic seals which will improve the friction.<\/div>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><\/div>\n\n<style type=\"text\/css\" data-created_by=\"avia_inline_auto\" id=\"style-css-av-hqdfb2-6690654637872c21fcb79518eeca1346\">\n.flex_column.av-hqdfb2-6690654637872c21fcb79518eeca1346{\n-webkit-border-radius:0px 0px 0px 0px;\n-moz-border-radius:0px 0px 0px 0px;\nborder-radius:0px 0px 0px 0px;\npadding:0px 0px 0px 0px;\n}\n<\/style>\n<div  class='flex_column av-hqdfb2-6690654637872c21fcb79518eeca1346 av_one_full  avia-builder-el-21  el_after_av_one_full  el_before_av_one_full  first flex_column_div av-zero-column-padding  column-top-margin'     ><section  class='av_textblock_section av-ea6ty6-213f95bb08f746c2d156bfbc23c76dec '   itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock'  itemprop=\"text\" ><p><strong>Installation<\/strong><\/p>\n<div>One advantage of thin cross-section seals is that they are easier to install.\u00a0 Thicker seals require more force to push the radial seal and piston into housing, or to compress an axial seal with the mating flange.\u00a0 Yet thin seals are easier since they require less installation force (radial seal) or compressive load force (axial seal).<\/div>\n<div>The final, and in some cases, only a potential advantage to smaller cross-section seals is the amount of material used to make the seal.
